Other Options

-survey parents – are they going to buy a laptop for their child?  If so, pay the school and we’ll provide the laptop for them

-if new classes are added, the Grade 5 IT Lab time could be cut opening up time for sections from other grade levels (compare that to the cost of setting up a new lab)

-parent funded laptop program would not cost the school much

-go Windows laptops/reduce cost

-go Linux or Ubuntu/further reduce cost

-go Open Office /further reduce cost

-use Web 2.0 applications/further reduce cost

-each teacher must run their own wiki and have students regularly contribute work there and reflect on their learning

Each student would have a Google account and use gmail, Google Docs, calendar, and Sites for school work

Writing were much improved, and he was so much more organized than before. He’d devised a number of ways to use the laptop to help him with his studies. Rather than using index cards to organize the 50 resources needed for a history project, for example, he’d developed an Access database with hyperlinks. His database model was so useful, the history teacher had been using it on other projects ever since. “The kid did it,” Inman remembers. “He understood the goal and context, understood the tool, and brought it to the next level” (2004).
