This week in IT

 

This is the second last week of school so it provides us an opportunity to finish last minute projects (or the Great Brain) and practice our typing skills.

 


Past weeks...

June 8-12

The Grade 1s will learn to use Google Earth. This week, the Grade 2s will continue their work on an iMovie by adding their pictures to their project.

 

 

The Grade 3s will complete their work on word processing, focusing on creating a brochure on Chile. The Grade 4s will choose a personal project that will last this week and next.  They will get to choose the software that they will use and set their own goals. The Grade 5s will be doing research for their Great Brain project.

The Grade 1s will use educational websites and that at 2:00 have to switch to GarageBand.  This is a good test to see how independent they have become. This week, the Grade 2s will start to work on an iMovie by finding pictures.

 

 

The Grade 3s will continue their work on word processing, focusing on creating a brochure on Chile. The Grade 4s will study computer theory by playing a game show similar to Jeopardy. The Grade 5s will be doing research for their Great Brain project.

The Grade 3s will use GarageBand to create a short 'Earth' podcast. The Grade 4s will start another iMovie based on their electricty unit. The Grade 5s are in between two major units so we'll take this week to test their keyboarding speed.

The Grade 5s will Google Earth to plot important locations in their Explorer's lives. They also have the class to finalize their work for the Wax Museum.

The Grade 5s will continue to type in their stories into a word processor and then creating a podcast of their story.

 

November 3-7

 

Grade 1s: The Grade 1s have the opportunity to play online typing games in order to improve their typing skills

 

Grade 2s: The Grade 2s will continue with their Animal Inspiration document where they list the characteristics of mammals, birds, insects, amphibians, fish and reptiles.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will use Inspiration to create a timeline of their lives!

 

Grade 4s: The Grade 4s will use Inspiration to list as many simple machines as they can after they visit this site!

 

Grade 5s: This week the Grade 5s will type in a story that they've written into a word processor.  They will also create a podcast of the story that they've written.

 

October 27-30

 

Grade 1s: will make scary Halloween pictures using KidPix!

 

Grade 2s: The Grade 2s will start an Inspiration unit where they create mind maps of the characteristics of mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and insects.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will get their plant PowerPoint presentations graded this week.  When they are finished, they will work on their typing skills.

 

Grade 4s: The Grade 4s will make podcasts of the Halloween stories that they wrote!

 

Grade 5s: The Grade 5s will have their iMovies graded this week and when they are finished, will complete their graphs from last week!

 

October 20-24

 

Grade 1: This week, the Grade 1s will return to KidPix for one week.

 

Grade 2: The Grade 2s will learn how to design houses in SketchUp this week!

 

Grade 3: This week, the Grade 3s will continue working on their PowerPoint presentations on plants, which they are studying in science class.

 

Grade 4: The Grade 4s will be doing a one class assignment on using mathematical functions in a spreadsheet.

 

Grade 5: The Grade 5s will be creating graphs this week as they will be studying them in math class.

 

October 13-18

 

Grade 1s: This week, the Grade 1s will be given a choice between www.pbskids.org,and primarygames.com.  They will have to switch from one website to the other so that they can practice their skills at typing in web addresses.

 

Grade 2s:  They will learn more skills in Scratch, which proved to be very popular with the students.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will work on a PowerPoint presentation on plants, which they are studying in class.

 

Grade 4s: As this is a short week, the Grade 4s will work on Scratch just for fun!

 

Grade 5s: This week the Grade 5s will be given a little extra time to complete their iMovie, share it and then practice their typing skills.

 

October 6-2

 

Grade 1s: This week, the Grade 1s will be given a choice between www.pbskids.org, www.sesamestreet.com and primarygames.com.  They will have to switch from one website to the other so that they can practice their skills at typing in web addresses.

 

Grade 2s:  They will learn more skills in Scratch, which proved to be very popular with the students.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will work on a PowerPoint presentation on plants, which they are studying in class.

 

Grade 4s: The Grade 4s will work on creating graphs using a spreadsheet program this week.  This is a colaboration with their math unit.

 

Grade 5s: This is the last week for the Grade 5s to complete their Learning Styles iMovie.  Some have a lot to do as they did not budget their time wisely in the last two weeks.

 

September 29-October 4

 

Grade 1s: The Grade 1s will be learning how to use www.spellingcity.com.  Mr. Ray has set up his spelling lists on the site and the students will use those lists to learn how to spell the words, play games such as hangman with the words and actually do practice spelling tests.

 

Grade 2s: The Grade 2s will learn how to use the freeware program Scratch.  This program teaches them many valuable skills such as file management, logic, basic programming and sprite editing.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will share their iMovies this week and learn how to copy  them to their server accounts so that they can be accessed anywhere in the school.

 

Grade 4s: Some Grade 4s did not quite finish their PowerPoint presentations on the environment.  They'll get an opportunity to finish up this week while those who are finished will work on their keyboarding skills.

 

Grade 5s: The Grade 5s will continue their iMovie based upon their own personal learning styles.

 

September 22-27

 

Grade 1s: The Grade 1s will get another opportunity to work with pbskids.org this week.  This will help us to reinforce the concept of opening a browser and navigating to different websites.

 

Grade 2s: The Grade 2s will continue to do Internet Research for their chosen country.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will complete their iMovie based on their Communities unit.

 

Grade 4s: The Grade 4s will complete their PowerPoint presentation based upon their Environment unit.

 

Grade 5s: The Grade 5s will start work on an iMovie that is based upon their particular learning styles.

 

Sept 8-12

 

Grade 1: This week, the Grade 1s will work on navigating to www.pbskids.org and the navigating the website and playing the educational games there.

 

Grade 2: This week, the Grade 2s will work on creating their own song in GarageBand!

 

Grade 3: The Grade 3s will work towards completing their Communities iMovie.

 

Grade 4: The Grade 4s will continue working on their Environment PowerPoints.  They got off to a great start last week!

 

Grade 5: The Grade 5s will work on a short unit on using formulas in Excel spreadsheets.

 

September 1-5

 

Grade 1s: This week, the Grade 1s will be working in KidPix.  In coordination with the counseling staff, we'll be creating a small document about the Peace Path (conflict resolution).  1. Stop 2. Think 3. Plan

 

Grade 2s: The Grade 2s will learn how to do Internet searches in preparation for their Countries unit.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will work on Stage 3 of their iMovie creation.  This week, they'll learn how to add their voice and put on the finishing touches of their movie!

 

Grade 4s: This week, we'll be working on PowerPoint and, of course, integrating their presentation with one of their classroom units!

 

Grade 5s: The Grade 5s will learn how to take and download pictures using our new digital cameras.

 

Aug 25-30

 

Grade 1s: The Grade 1s have been doing a fantastic job using the Harcourt Math program that the school recently bought.  We're going to do another week of Harcourt to allow the students to become even more independent at the program plus allow them to work on their math skills.

 

Grade 2s: The Grade 2s will discuss Internet safety.

 

Grade 3s: The Grade 3s will work on Stage 2 of their iMovie creation.  This week, they will take the pictures that they found last week and put them in their movie.  They will also learn how to add effects. 

 

Grade 4s: The Grade 4s will review latitude and longitude this week using this website and Google Earth.

 

Grade 5s: The Grade 5s will continue to work on the server and learn how to use DashBoard, Apple's widget manager.

 

For the week of Aug 18-22

 

Grade 1s: The Grade 1s will spend another week on the new Harcourt Math program that the school purchased.  Not only does it teach them MATH but it reinforces a lot of software navigation skills.

 

Grade 2s: This week, the Grade 2s will finish their graph using Excel, a spreadsheet.  They caught on very quickly to using a spreadsheet last week.

 

Grade 3s: This week, the Grade 3s will start making their very own iMovie on suburbs, rural and urban areas. They're studying these concepts in class and making their own movie will help to reinforce these concepts.

 

Grade 4s: The Grade 4s will use Google Earth this week as well.  They are studying the environment and we will take screenshots and copy them into a word processor.  The students will then provide a brief description of their screenshot.

 

Grade 5s: The Grade 5s will complete their Google Earth/word processing assignment where they took screenshots of various weathering and erosion features in Google Earth.  They then copied the photos in to a word processor and provided a brief description of the erosion.


For the week of Aug 11-15

 

The school has purchased a fantastic math program called Harcourt Math.  This system will be a great addition to the math program and will allow teachers to challenge those students who are more advanced while supporting those students who may have a little difficulty with some concepts.   

 

 

Grades 1, 3 and 4 will learn how to log in and use the software.

 

Grade 2: The Grade 2s will get an introduction to spreadsheets.  This unit will tie in with their classroom unit on graphing.  We will do a quick survey and graph that data using Excel.

 

 

Grade 5: The Grade 5s are studying weathering and erosion in class.  What better program than Google Earth to 'see' the effects of weathering.  The students will find examples of weathering and take screenshots of the erosion.  They will then place that image in a word processor and include a brief description of the picture.

 

For the week of Aug 4-8

Grade 1 - We will once again work with KidPix, a graphics program.  This week, we'll teach the students how to use more tools.

Grades 2-5: Last week, there were some issues with the server so we were unable to work on it.  Instead, we did some keyboarding skills work.  This week, we will work on creating folders to help keep our work organized throughout the year.

 

For the week of July 28-Aug 1

 

Grade 1 - This week, the Grade 1s will be introduced to the class rules and assigned a computer that they will work on for the year.  We will then start learning some of the basic skills of KidPix

, a graphics program.

 

 

 

All students from Grade 2-5 will review the lab rules and then be assigned a computer.  They will also learn the new routine of practicing their keyboarding skills at the start of class.

 

 

 

Grade 2 - The Grade 2s will be introduced to using the server and creating folders on their server account.

 

 

Grade 3 - The Grade 3s will be introduced to using the server and creating folders on their server account.
